Just One Thing: A Translation

By Prokofy Neva, Virtualtor

Translation 1Some days you can't remember what you did even a few hours ago. You feel as if you have been doing things all day, but what is there to show for it? I get up, get washed, get dressed, feed the cat, water the plants, make breakfast or lunch for that matter if it is late, wash dishes, sweep the floor, tidy up the place, take out the garbage — where has the day gone?

Then in SL, it seemed like an entire hour got burned sprucing up some B&B rentals in Grote, taking new pictures, putting in a new ad in the land, putting an add in Classifieds, putting an ad on the forums, fixing up the living room with new furniture and art and refreshments…

Somehow, I read a book. And you can follow along at Good Reads on how my "Reading Challenge" is going. I don't know if I can qualify reading a book as having "done a thing". Maybe if it is some sort of useful non-fiction lol?

I made a set of Owl Prince comics, then put captions in one, based on @808Drift's prompt. There might come a time when I will call this sort of activity "a done thing" but I'm not there yet. Not with the miles-long RL things I have to do.

So…if I could just finish a translation that should normally take only a day or two but seems to have dragged on for some days, that would count surely.

Translation is, of course, from the Latin word "to carry across" and indeed it can be a slog, with a heavy load, in the rain, across a swamp. I often remember the words of the famed Vladimir Kozlovsky of Novoye Russkoye Slovo and the BBC Russian Service, author of a dictionary of Russian slang among other books, who used to say that you need a dictionary not because you don't know the foreign language, but because you can't remember your own. You understand perfectly what the Russian says, but you can't think of the right English. Can I say "in cahoots with" for сговорились? Is that too slangy? But that's what Yandex has…About Yandex, another day…

OK, so done and filed, but there's lots more where that came from.

You have to bear your burdens…
